Munich

Our second German city was Munich so here's some of the highlights:

MC and the supposed 'devil's footprint' inside Pope Benedict's old church. There's a wee story behind the devil footprint thing but.. meh
The new townhall in Munich. It has a glockenspiel just to the left of this photo which sings and dances on the hour. Lots of tourists gazing up at it from Marienplatz for a minute or so.
We visited Dachau concentration camp. Spent quite a few hours in the very sobering museum.
The entrance to Dachau - the words on the gate say 'Arbeit macht frei' or work will set you free...
We climbed the tower of one of the churches here for a panorama view of the city.
Munich wins the prize for the best grass (although we havn't been to Amsterdam yet..ho ho). Ahem. It was very lush though.
John with a typical Bavarian feed - Leberkäse (liver cheese but doesn't have liver or cheese in it... go figure) and beer.

Oops out of synch again but MC in the main grounds of Dachau.
John (with sombre face) in the crematorium.
Bunk beds in the living quarters at Dachau.
And the cells for prisoners who needed solitary confinement.
MC with a symbolic memorial at Dachau.
Yay onto a cheerier outing! Neuschwanstein (the Disney Castle) in the Alps about 2 hours from Munich. It's been in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Sleeping Beauty. Very pretty and very interesting character who built it (King Ludwig II).
A view of another castle (but not such a pretty one) from Neuschwanstein.
The scenery is very beautiful round here. And this photo doesn't have John getting in the way...
On the walk up to the castle. We didn't get very good weather at all for our castle visit. Grey and rainy all day.
On the way down we walked through a gorge behind the castle.

Awwww, today we went to the English gardens here (a lovely park except for the nudists with interesting piercings... ugh). Baby swans are much nicer.
Surfers in the river in the English gardens. Obviously there's not much sea around here.
In the Hofbräuhaus (famous beer hall). The band in their lederhosen (leather shorts).
Mmmm beer.... MC chugging back a cold one.
The wee town of Füssen with the castle obscured in the clouds above.
Tonight is our last night in Munich, tomorrow we head to Salzburg, Austria.

Good to see your Munich photos. Pity the weather wasn't better for Neuschwanstein. You're very diligent at keeping your site updated. Dad wonders if he has permission to use the pictures in class. Well it's Jonathan's birthday today hence John's also. Happy quarter century! Hope you enjoy spending it in Sound of Music country. Till next time.

Was the 'Devils Footprint' a perfect fit for either of you? I see you enjoyed the Viktualien Markt. You can't get much better than a cool, crisp stein with a big pretzel out in the sun!
